A member of one of America’s most famous Democratic families, the 69-year-old Kennedy was running a long-shot Democratic primary bid but has better favorability ratings among Republicans. Biden's allies so far have dismissed Kennedy’s primary campaign as unserious. Asked for comment on his potential independent run, a Democratic National Committee spokesman responded with an eye roll emoji. Kennedy took leave from the group when he announced his run for president but is listed as one of its attorneys in the lawsuit. ___The Associated Press receives support from several private foundations to enhance its explanatory coverage of elections and democracy.

Taken together, these results suggest that the favorable political environment for Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade has endured through much of 2023. “Dobbs absolutely changed the way that people thought about and processed things that they had perceived as a given,” said Heather Williams, the interim president of the D.L.C.C. In January 2010, Scott Brown won a shocking upset in a Senate special election in deep-blue Massachusetts by running against President Barack Obama’s health care push. In March 2018, Conor Lamb won a special election to fill a House seat in a deep-red Pennsylvania district by campaigning as a centrist voice against Mr. Trump. Both the Brown and Lamb special elections served as indicators of the wave elections their parties won in subsequent midterm elections.

“China is the greatest strategic and economic threat facing the United States in the 21st century,” Pence said in his speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. For months, China as a foreign policy adversary has been the favored topic of Republican primary candidates. Nikki Haley, who served as ambassador to the United Nations, made a point of spelling out how adversarial the relationship between the United States and China has become. “Yes, I view China as an enemy.”Haley has also used China as a way to frame Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as weak and incompetent. During the worst days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump dug in against criticism directed at him for calling the coronavirus the “China virus.”Trump has used China to argue he has done more than other administrations.

DeSantis' camp on Tuesday announced that it was ousting campaign manager Generra Peck and bringing in two top outside strategists. Replacing Peck, who is now the campaign's chief strategist, is James Uthmeier, previously the governor's chief of staff. Campaign insiders and donors say the replacement of Peck is unlikely to quell anxiety about the direction of DeSantis' campaign. NEW CAMPAIGN MANAGER, SAME STRATEGYUthmeier's appointment had been in the works for weeks, said one person close to the process. Ron DeSantis on Sunday rejected Donald Trump's claim that he was the true winner of the 2020 presidential election in his most forceful comments to date on the matter. DeSantis continued to discuss all the ways he believed the previous presidential election was not perfect. DeSantis' comments come just days after Trump pleaded not guilty to charges that he broke the law by trying to overturn the 2020 election. I don't think it was a good-run election," DeSantis said. Florida has long allowed anyone who wants to vote by mail to do so, including in the 2020 election.

WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Republicans with ambitions to move into the White House have a love-hate relationship with Bidenomics. A continued push for true “energy independence” probably would look more like Biden’s strategy than anything else. The agenda includes 10 core tenets, including greater independence from China, energy independence and promoting domestic investment. He called for “aggressive new restrictions” on Chinese ownership of U.S. infrastructure in a Jan. 18 campaign video and emphasized domestic energy independence in a Feb. 9 video.

"I beat Biden in Georgia, Trump doesn't. I beat Biden soundly in Arizona, Trump doesn't," DeSantis said of Trump in a Fox News interview. The likely Republican primary voters also told the pollsters that they considered Trump to be more electable against Biden than DeSantis. Asked whether the phrase "Able to beat Joe Biden" better described Trump or DeSantis 58% of those respondents picked the former president, versus 28% who chose the governor. Fox's Bret Baier asked DeSantis, "You don't believe that former President Trump could win a general election against Joe Biden?"

Ron DeSantis on Monday unveiled a lengthy economic agenda aimed to spur growth by upending the U.S. trade relationship with China, reversing Biden administration regulations and confronting corporations deemed to be pushing "woke" ideals. "The goal of our Declaration of Independence is simple," DeSantis said as he detailed the plan in Rochester, New Hampshire. Both Trump and DeSantis, for instance, have vowed to decouple the U.S. economy from China and reverse trade deficits with Beijing. DeSantis' agenda would also seek to address Chinese intellectual property theft and ban China from purchasing "strategic assets" in the U.S., according to a fact sheet from the DeSantis campaign. DeSantis "will not tolerate woke corporations using ESG," his campaign said, referring to the investing principles that consider environmental, social and governance factors.

Such was the first day of DeSantis' "reboot" of his campaign in New Hampshire, the No. Before DeSantis began his speech, Michael Lunder, a 67-year-old businessman, said he was "probably going to support (DeSantis) financially." "I learned a few things that I didn't agree with, but, in general, I think I might support him," Lunder concluded. CAMPAIGN REBOOTIn the last two weeks, the DeSantis campaign has undergone a shake-up both in style and personnel, according to several people close to the campaign. He disagreed with DeSantis' position that support for Ukraine in its war with Russia is not a vital U.S. national security interest.

REUTERS/John Morris/File PhotoOTTAWA, July 24 (Reuters) - Two of the four people missing after floods ripped through the Canadian Atlantic province of Nova Scotia over the weekend are dead, Premier Tim Houston said on Monday. The floods washed away roads, swamped buildings and damaged bridges and a Canadian National Railway (CNR.TO) track connecting with Halifax, Canada's fourth-largest port. Canadian National has already restored much of the damaged infrastructure, but some repairs will be delayed until the flood waters recede, company spokesman Scott Brown said. "With supply chains the reality is the longer the disruption lasts, the more severe the impact is," he said by phone.

The musical, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, began its life in the comedy world, at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where King was the artistic director, and then was further developed at the New York Musical Festival. The director will be Alex Timbers, who also directed the 2006 Off Broadway production; Timbers later won a Tony Award for directing “Moulin Rouge!,” and he has also worked in comedy, including as the director of “Oh, Hello” on Broadway. “I love this show, and it gets seen and performed all over the world, but isn’t really known in New York,” Timbers said. “Broadway is rebounding, and it is due for an even bigger rebound,” Gad said. But the judge who sentenced Maly noted that most of his crimes date back to his 20s. Maly told US District Judge Amit Mehta that he regrets traveling to Washington and following the mob of then-President Donald Trump's supporters to the Capitol. It's that you did these things and kept doing them that day," the judge told him. Maly testified at his trial that participating in the Capitol riot was "fun" for him. The judge sentenced Schwartz last month to 14 years and two months in prison, the longest for a Jan. 6 case before Rhodes, and sentenced Brown in April to four years and six months in prison.

A welder by trade, Schwartz was arrested in early February in his hometown of Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Schwartz and two co-defendants, Jeffrey Scott Brown and Markus Maly, became the first three individuals convicted at trial of assaulting police officers with pepper spray on Jan. 6. Schwartz's wife, Shelly Stallings, received a two-year prison term last month. His 170-month prison term surpasses the previous longest sentence yet handed down in a case related to the Jan. 6 attack - 10 years received by former New York City cop Thomas Webster for assaulting a Washington police officer that day. The Jan. 6 attack marked the most violent assault on the halls of Congress since the British invasion of Washington during the War of 1812.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Two Iowa teenagers killed their high school Spanish teacher last year because of frustration over a bad grade, prosecutors said Tuesday in court documents that for the first time reveal a possible motive. Investigators allege that one of the teens met with Graber at Fairfield High School on the afternoon of Nov. 2, 2021, to discuss their poor grade in her class. Graber later drove her van to a park where she was known to take daily walks after school, authorities say. “The poor grade is believed to be the motive behind the murder of Graber," court documents filed by Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding and Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown said. Iowa Supreme Court rulings require juveniles convicted of even the most serious crimes to be given a chance for parole.
